Junges Theater Münster (D)

Learning to Fly (Fliegen lernen)

Marta's mother fell out of a tree, shortly before Marta's 10th birthday. Now she's sitting on a cloud in the sky. Not only does her cheeky cat, Mo, think this is nonsense. Marta's best friend, Jojo, also doesn't believe in an accident. He's known for a long time that grown-ups don't tell the truth out of fear, especially parents when they are getting divorced or when they have other problems.

But Marta doesn't have time to sit in her room, brooding and crying. She's working on an experiment: How many gas-filled balloons are necessary in order to get her off the ground?

With poetic images, “Fliegen lernen” tells about a girl's search for truth and self-determination. Marta learns that failure is part of life and at the same time she experiences that pain and disappointment are more easily bearable, if they can be shared with a friend.

The director Thomas Hollaender completed his training as an actor at the University of the Arts in Berlin and made his début at the Schiller Theatre in a piece from and with Peter Ustinov. He realised his first children's production at the Children's Theatre Cottbus. Additional productions for children in Münster, Mannheim, Mainz and Osnabrück followed. Hollaender also works as an announcer for radio and television.
